L’Estat de la Ciència a Catalunya és un informe biennal que neix de la necessitat de disposar de dades actualitzades de la recerca i la innovació catalana, i analitzar, de forma sistemàtica i contextualitzada, els seus resultats a nivell europeu. A partir de les dades i indicadors més rellevants, aportades pels diferents agents del sistema de recerca i innovació, es posa en relleu l’estat de la nostra recerca, detectant-ne tant les fortaleses com els punts de millora, permetent alhora apreciar-ne l’evolució al llarg del temps.

This report provides a non-exhaustive overview of the EU's key research and innovation (R&I) activities in 2021 and the monitoring of Horizon Europe, Horizon 2020 and the Euratom Programme.

This study analyses the role that EU copyright rules play in enabling or hindering access to and re-use of scientific publications, including through Open Access. It finds its starting point in the connected but distinct notions of access and re-use. The study examines the possibilities for re-use enabled by the exceptions and limitations to copyright recognised in the current legal framework. It also examines the fundamental rights framework that underpins these. It considers two ways to facilitate access to scientific publications: via non-legislative and via legislative means. On the basis of the analysis, the study draws conclusions in the form of legislative and non-legislative recommendations.

In this statement, LERU outlines its thoughts on current barriers to the effective RI use in Europe, and what could be done about them. We consider all scales of RI, from the larger, EFSRI-type RI to the medium and smaller research infrastructures which are typically housed in university departments as core facilities or technology facilities.

This paper discusses how countries’ vision for science, technology and innovation (STI) priorities has evolved through COVID-19. The analysis was conducted on a sample of 171 STI strategy documents from 11 countries that were released between 2013 and 2021. Depending on the context, these documents seek to build consensus, manage actors, communicate or signal directions for policy, or achieve internal organisational motives.

Co-creation – the joint production of innovation between combinations of industry, research, government and civil society – was widely used to respond to the challenges raised by the COVID-19 pandemic. This paper describes 30 COVID-19 co-creation initiatives from 21 countries and three international cases. The template focuses on initiatives’ core characteristics, including information on key co-creation partners and their contributions, key outcomes as well as the initiatives’ size.

Evidence on these initiatives was gathered based on structured interviews with initiative leaders.

The Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) uses six objective indicators to rank world universities, including the number of alumni and staff winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals, number of highly cited researchers selected by Clarivate, number of articles published in journals of Nature and Science, number of articles indexed in Science Citation Index Expanded™ and Social Sciences Citation Index™ in the Web of Science™, and per capita performance of a university. More than 2500 universities are actually ranked by ARWU every year and the best 1000 are published.

El projecte Castells de Ciència neix amb la voluntat de fer divulgació científica a partir d'un fenomen cultural, multitudinari, arrelat al territori i reconegut internacionalment, com són els castells, declarats Patrimoni Cultural i Immaterial de la Humanitat per la UNESCO l'any 2010. Castells de Ciència té l'objectiu de relacionar diferents disciplines científiques amb l'activitat castellera, i demostrar que es pot parlar sobre química, antropologia, física, arquitectura, sociologia o història i de molts d'altres àmbits científics a l'hora de referir-se als castells.
