This case study will focus on the use of citizen science methods in the surveillance and monitoring of mosquitos in the Global Mosquito Alert project and more specific national projects such as the Spanish Mosquito Alert project. It will identify the key organisations behind the projects and the drivers, barriers and impact so far. Over recent years, the world has seen outbreaks of mosquito-borne diseases such as Zika, chikungunya and dengue with the World Health Organisation estimating over 500 million new cases each year. To gain a better understanding of disease carrying mosquitos and their geographical movement is needed and traditional tools used for monitoring have limitations. By actively involving citizens in the scientific process and by validating their findings through the participation of experts, many of these problems can be overcome. The result is the generation of accurate, early warning information about disease-carrying mosquitos that can become a valuable source of information for public health services.
