El Llibre blanc sobre la Intel·ligència Artificial aplicada al sector de l’Energia, elaborat pel Centre of Innovation for Data Tech and Artificial Intelligence (CIDAI), té com a objectiu contribuir a l’impuls, el foment de l’adopció i la incorporació de la IA en els diferents processos que afecten l’energia: tant en la generació, com el transport i distribució, la comercialització, el consum i l’emmagatzematge.

The European Innovation Scoreboard (EIS) is an annual publication by the European Commission that provides a comparative assessment of the innovation performance of EU Member States, neighbouring European countries and selected global competitors. The EIS is based on 32 indicators covering the economy, business and entrepreneurship, innovation profiles, governance and policy framework, climate change and demography.  The EIS 2024 categorises Member States in four innovation groups based on their scores: Innovation Leaders (performance is above 125% of the EU average), Strong Innovators (between 100% and 125% of the EU average), Moderate Innovators (between 70% and 100% of the EU average) and Emerging Innovators (below 70% of the EU average).

This thematic report provides an introductory overview of Public Engagement in Research and Innovation in Europe, as discussed during the first meeting of the Mutual Learning Exercise on Public Engagement in Research and Innovation. Various policies, frameworks, resources, and projects (mainly EU funded) to promote Public Engagement practices are described. The report aims to inspire and help public actors and policymakers to promote and support public engagement.

Despite significant advances in STEM education and a growing emphasis on gender equality in research and policy circles, women across Europe remain under-represented in STEM careers and among graduates majoring in STEM-related fields.

Executive summary

Horizon Europe is the EU's key funding programme for research and innovation, containing ambitious commitments to scientific progress, climate neutrality, and improving the EU's competitiveness and growth. This study evaluates the following selected items in Horizon Europe: the evolution of calls and funding, adoption of the Common Model Grant Agreement (CMGA), implementation of the strategic plan, discontinuation of the Future and Emerging Technologies (FET) Flagship, the participation barriers faced by SMEs, and stakeholders' views on the evaluation system. Drawing on surveys and interviews, the study aims to identify both the key strengths and shortcomings of Horizon Europe in terms of these selected items. Lastly, the study suggests ways to mitigate the shortcomings highlighted by stakeholders.

New this year, we introduce data for the 20th member, the European Union, plus data for the African Union – previously an invited organization but granted full member status in Delhi, September 2023.

This report from the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the International Science Council (ISC) shows why the world must get better at tracking and responding to a host of emerging challenges as environmental, technological and societal change join forces to disrupt human and planetary health. This report identifies eight critical global shifts that are accelerating the triple planetary crisis of climate change, nature and biodiversity loss, and pollution and waste.

Innovation is a driver of competitive advantage and economic growth, with patent rights playing a critical supporting role. However, differential access to patent rights and relatively less participation in innovation can affect women and people from other historically underrepresented groups, thereby hindering progress and limiting the potential economic benefits generated by innovation. This paper reviews the global literature on these “diversity gaps”, identifies their key drivers, and documents international policies and initiatives that show promise in addressing them. Building upon Shapanka and Fechner (2018), it expands the geographic scope and reinforces the scientific basis of their analysis. The paper also provides recommendations for a wide range of stakeholders and offers insights for fostering more inclusive and equitable innovation ecosystems.
