The report looks at how engineering biology can be applied in different sectors and how it has the power to transform industries. It also examines biosolutions from a sustainability perspective. The report draws insights from a survey of 1,100 executives at large organizations (with over $1 billion in annual revenue) across 11 industries globally, as well as 500 executives from startups in the field of engineering biology and related domains.

The Strategic Technologies for Europe Platform (STEP) was set up by the EU to support the European industry and boost investment in critical technologies in Europe. STEP raises and steers funding across 11 EU programmes to three target investment areas: Digital technologies and deep-tech innovation; Clean and resource-efficient technologies; Biotechnologies.

The report looks at the challenges faced by the industry and companies in the Single Market. The findings of the report will contribute to the Commission’s work on a new plan for Europe’s sustainable prosperity and competitiveness. And in particular, to the development of the new Clean Industrial Deal for competitive industries and quality jobs, which will be presented in the first 100 days of the new Commission mandate.

In-depth analysis and recommendations

This thematic report has been prepared in the context of the Mutual Learning Exercise (MLE) on Research Careers involving 16 committed participating countries. The report is based on the first meeting of the MLE held in Brussels on 27-28 June 2024 on the topic of Recruitment, Working Conditions, Career Development, and Progression of Researchers. The report is structured around a simplified HR lifecycle structure, dividing the broad MLE topic into five sections, discussing the impact of career policies from the employee journey perspective.

This document was developed by the ERA Forum sub-group ‘Inclusive Gender Equality in the ERA’, in close cooperation with the European Commission. It aims to address incidents of gender-based violence in research and higher education environments by setting out a common approach, definitions, and a list of principles to guide Member States and other stakeholders and individuals, to create a European Research and Innovation environment free from all forms of gender-based violence, based on the values of gender equality and inclusiveness, respect, dignity and safety.

Foresight is gaining international recognition as a critical set of tools for supporting proactive sustainable development. As the world grapples with rapid and unprecedented changes, particularly concerning the environment and technology, there is a renewed focus on future-oriented thinking to identify drivers of change, to navigate uncertainty, and to better inform today’s decisions. The International Science Council, in partnership with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), has conducted a comprehensive review of existing tools and methods of horizon scanning and foresight, and has convened a reflection on the evolution of foresight.

This report documents the process and findings of a horizon scanning exercise, part of a series under the FUTURINNOV (FUTURe-oriented detection and assessment of emerging technologies and breakthrough INNOVation) project, a collaboration between the European Innovation Council (EIC) and the Joint Research Centre (JRC), aiming to bolster the EIC's strategic intelligence through foresight and anticipatory methodologies.

These recommendations contribute to a more robust policy framework for research software, recognising the important role of software in research. The document highlights research software as an emerging element of open science policies and practices, and makes recommendations to research funding and research performing organisations on developing and aligning policies related to research software based on existing good practices and other resources.
