RRI-Leaders explores the relevance of Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI) to territorial governance in four European territories, which represent different cultural and socio-economic backgrounds, different scope of territorial oversight, different institutional and decision-making infrastructures, different R&I landscapes, and different dynamics among territorial actors: the city of Sofia, Bulgaria; the Region of Western Macedonia, Greece; the city of Sabadell, Spain; and the city of Thalwil, Switzerland.

L'obra ofereix una retrospectiva de l'evolució dels doctorats industrials, destacant la contribució del personal doctor en el progrés econòmic i social de Catalunya. El llibre desgrana l'impacte del Pla des dels seus inicis, comparant-lo amb programes internacionals i evidenciant un canvi de tendència en la inserció laboral del personal doctor cap al sector privat no acadèmic.

In this publication, the ESIR group explores the research, innovation, and technology policy through the lens of geopolitical competition. This focus paper emphasizes the importance of a European technology policy that supports sustainability, democracy, and responsible innovation. It calls for proactive investment in research and innovation to shape global frameworks. In a rapidly changing world, Europe’s position must be strengthened while making sure technology serves humanity and addresses environmental challenges.

This report presents the results of a study on S&T&I for 2050: science, technology and innovation for ecosystem performance – accelerating sustainability transitions. The aim was to identify, map and assess future scientific and technological developments that can radically improve or threaten ecosystem performance. Based on literature review, the project team developed three perspectives on future relations between humans and nature and humans’ role in the flourishing of planetary ecosystems. Drawing in addition on a two-round Dynamic Argumentative Delphi survey on the most dynamic scientific and technological developments, six cased studies on core sustainability issues explored the three perspectives. Reflections on implications for R&I policies in the context of the European Green Deal conclude each case study.

University rankings have become a fact of (university) life. Since their emergence several decades ago, they have come to feature prominently, and often controversially, in discussions about demonstrating university performance and measuring quality and excellence in higher education. With this text, the European University Association (EUA) presents a set of guiding considerations to support universities in using global rankings responsibly.

This paper presents new evidence on the size and direction of governments’ R&D funding response to the COVID-19 pandemic through the exploration of a novel data infrastructure, the OECD Fundstat initiative for the analysis of government-funded R&D projects. The document reports on the exploratory development and application of automatic classification tools to detect relevant COVID-19 R&D funding, map salient topics and classify and allocate project funding according to priorities in the WHO COVID-19 R&D Blueprint, as well as comparing results with similar analysis of scientific publication output data. The results provide new insights on which areas of enquiry were prioritised by governmental R&D funding bodies.

This report analyses the situation of the Spanish entrepreneur ecosystem in regard to other regions and allows one to see its behaviour in recent years, and from more than 4,432 projects signing up to the Startup Competition South Summit Madrid 2022, of which 80% are international. South Summit is the innovation platform that connects entrepreneurs, corporations and investors to generate business and shape the future.
