The European Union has the ambition to become the global beacon for life sciences by 2030, offering an ecosystem where innovation thrives and breakthroughs in health, food, and sustainability improve lives.

The European Commission has adopted a Quantum Strategy to position Europe as a global leader in quantum by 2030. Despite its remarkable progress in quantum technology, the EU is currently lagging behind in translating its innovation capabilities and future potential into real market opportunities, while also struggling with fragmentation of strategies and roadmaps across Member States. While highlighting Europe’s strengths, the Quantum Europe Strategy aims to turn Europe into a quantum powerhouse by fostering a resilient, sovereign quantum ecosystem, that fuels startup growth and transforms breakthrough science into market-ready applications, while maintaining its scientific leadership.

AI techniques are helping researchers to make valuable new discoveries across disciplines such as biology, neuroscience and biotechnology. Through the analysis of vast datasets and the identification of complex patterns, AI is speeding up the discovery of new therapeutic drugs and helping us to monitor and manage our resources better. This CORDIS Results Pack showcases the application of AI in 15 EU-funded projects in this field, providing new insights in life sciences.

This report has been prepared within the ‘European Monitor of Industrial Ecosystems’ (EMI) project, initiated by the European Commission, Directorate General for Internal Market, Industry, Entrepreneurship and SMEs and the European Innovation Council and SMEs Executive Agency (EISMEA). The overall objective of the project is to contribute to the analysis of the green and digital transformation of industrial ecosystems and progress made over time.

This report presents a patent landscape analysis investigating the innovation trends within the industrial biotechnology (IB) sector from 2015 to 2020. The study's primary objective is to identify the geographical hotspots of innovation, the key players, and the role of different types of organizations in driving technological advancements in IB. 

In recent years, Scaleup Spain has gone through waves of rapid growth – some quite remarkable, particularly in 2021 and 2022, when Spain outpaced all other European hubs. Even in 2023, amid global economic winds of recession, Spain stood out as one of Europe’s most resilient innovation ecosystems.

The WIPO Pathfinders Report synthesizes insights from over 45 interviews with prominent thought leaders and experts within the innovation and creation ecosystem, exploring how IP-driven innovation and creativity might evolve by 2034. Structured across four chapters, the report assists Member States and the IP community in understanding how current trends may shape the future landscape, providing a foundation for exploring various potential futures for the IP system in the medium to long term.
