CORDIS results pack on chemical biology - A thematic collection of innovative EU-funded research results (July 2020) - European Commission

In medieval times, alchemy was the forerunner of chemistry, and was known as the ‘handmaid of medicine’. Ironically, now that the boundaries between scientific disciplines are becoming less distinct, this relationship is much stronger. This CORDIS Results Pack illustrates how chemical biology provides tools , to understand the epidemiology of a variety of diseases, and to design more efficacious drugs.

Macroeconomic models for Research and Innovation policy: The present and the future - European Commission

This paper provides a brief overview of the modelling platforms used by the European Commission for the impact assessment of R&D and innovation policies, discussing the advantages and limitations of the main models presently at use. The theoretical description is also accompanied by an example of model-based impact simulations of actual policies implemented by the EU, with focus on the
European Commission's future Framework Programme, Horizon Europe. The R&D development agenda is also delineated by describing the initiatives of DG Research and Innovation and DG Joint Research Centre.

Mapping 21st century science/technology linkages: Has science become more important in recent technological development? - European Commission

Understanding how progress in science is connected to technological development is crucial to get a better handle of the drivers and policy levers that can foster science-based innovation in a rapidly changing innovation ecosystems and knowledgeintensive economies. One area of rising interest is understanding in more detail the role of basic and applied scientific research in driving new emerging
technologies and related technological innovations. Science is an important source of novel ideas, tools, materials and prototypes in some areas of advanced technological development. The key question however is whether or not science has become increasingly important in recent technological developments. To address this question, in a broad systematic fashion, one needs to establish a stable frame of reference, appropriate empirical information, and a sufficiently long time-window.

CORDIS results pack on environmental observations - A thematic collection of innovative EU-funded research results (August 2020) - European Commission

Observing the environment from space, from the ground and from mobile platforms provides a constant and consistent flow of information about the health of the planet, the changing climate and the human activities and their impacts. By supporting the GEO initiative and the Copernicus programme, and by funding related research activities in Horizon 2020, the EU is actively contributing to worldwide efforts to build a global observation network. This CORDIS Results Pack showcases the results of several Horizon 2020-funded projects, which have been building on these assets to develop commercial applications, create benefits for our citizens and support better policymaking.

European higher education in the Covid-19 crisis - European University Association (EUA)

This briefing looks at the impact of the Covid-19 crisis on higher education in Europe over the past six months. In particular, it examines the sudden shift to emergency remote learning and teaching, the impact on internationalisation and mobility, as well as the effects on research.

How to set up a mentoring programme for researchers in academia interested in non-academic jobs - Fundación Española para la Ciencia y la Tecnología (FECYT)

During 2019, 5 partners of the project EURAXESS TOP IV “Open EURAXESS – To strengthen the effectiveness and optimize the services of all partners in an innovative and open EURAXESS network” (funded from the Research and Innovation framework Horizon 2020 of the European Union under grant agreement 786133) run a mentoring programme pilot that put in touch young researchers with highly skilled professionals somehow related to R&D&I but not doing research in academia. The aim of the programme was to test whether such a mentoring programme could support young researchers have a better view of their career options inside and outside academia, as well as to provide recommendations for EURAXESS staff. This document reflects on the reasons for such a programme and the lessons learnt during its design, implementation and evaluation. It intends to be a useful toolkit for those institutions wanting to deploy similar programmes for their early stage researchers.

Optimising the operation and use of national research infrastructures - Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD)

This report is the outcome of a joint activity between Science Europe and the OECD, and presents a generic framework for improving the use and operation of national research infrastructures (RIs), which play a key role in enabling and developing research in all scientific domains and represent an increasingly large share of research investment. It includes two guiding models: one for portfolio management and one for user-base optimisation. These identify the key principles of an effective national RI portfolio management system and the factors that RI managers should consider with regards to optimising the user base of national RIs. Both guiding models account for the diversity of national systems and RI operation approaches. The report also contains a series of more generic policy recommendations and suggested actions for RI portfolio managers and RI managers.
